Where the work begins

Build the decision around the business requirement.

Microsoft Enterprise Mobility + Security (EMS) is available in E3 and E5 suites and brings together identity and mobility capabilities, with exact entitlements depending on the subscription and current service terms. Atmic helps organisations translate access policy into Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft Intune and related controls for users, devices, applications and information. We verify licences and dependencies before recommending Conditional Access, device compliance, app protection or advanced identity and information-protection features.

Problems we help address

Clarity before configuration.

Cloud applications are available from many locations, but sign-in risk, device trust and privileged access are not governed consistently.
Personal, corporate and shared devices need different controls without treating every platform or ownership model as identical.
MFA has been introduced unevenly, with gaps around administrators, legacy authentication, service accounts or emergency access.
Mobile application data needs protection even where full device enrolment is inappropriate or not accepted.
Security policies have been drafted before confirming Microsoft Entra, Intune, application and information-protection licence dependencies.

Scope and capabilities

What a well-scoped engagement can include.

Final scope depends on the environment, priorities, product entitlements and agreed responsibilities.

01

Identity and access baseline

Review users, groups, administrative roles, authentication methods, application access and hybrid identity dependencies in Microsoft Entra ID. Establish least-privilege and emergency-access decisions.

02

MFA and Conditional Access planning

Define who, what, where and which risk signals should influence access, then build report-only or pilot policies where supported. Conditional Access requires suitable Microsoft Entra licensing.

03

Device enrolment and compliance

Design Microsoft Intune enrolment, platform restrictions, configuration profiles, compliance rules and retirement actions for supported corporate and personal-device scenarios.

04

Mobile application management

Apply supported Intune app-protection controls to corporate data in managed applications, including scenarios where full device enrolment is not appropriate, subject to platform and licence support.

05

Information protection alignment

Connect classification, sensitivity and handling requirements to the Microsoft information-protection capabilities actually licensed and used by the organisation. Coordinate with broader DLP and records decisions.

06

Operational ownership

Document policy owners, exclusions, alert routes, lost-device actions, joiner-mover-leaver tasks, privileged changes and the review process for licences and platform updates.

Potential business benefits

Designed for usefulness after handover.

Access decisions that consider identity, application and device context where supported.
A clearer distinction between corporate-device management and app-level protection on personal devices.
Staged policy enforcement that gives teams time to find dependencies and resolve exclusions.
Licence choices linked to named controls instead of broad suite assumptions.
Repeatable administration and exception processes after project handover.

Practical use cases

Strengthen access to Microsoft 365

Protect administrative roles, expand MFA, address legacy authentication, pilot Conditional Access and verify emergency-access procedures without assuming every user has the same licence or device.

Manage corporate mobile and Windows devices

Define enrolment and ownership, deploy configuration and compliance policies, distribute supported applications and document lost, replaced and retired device procedures.

Protect work data on personal mobiles

Use supported app-protection patterns for selected mobile applications, decide how data can move between managed and personal locations, and communicate privacy and removal behaviour clearly.

Assessment and implementation

A controlled route from current state to usable outcome.

Each stage establishes evidence for the next decision. The sequence is adjusted to suit risk, dependencies and change windows.

1

Assess identities, devices and licences

Inventory users, roles, applications, authentication, device ownership, operating systems, current management and exact subscriptions.

2

Define policy outcomes

Agree access, compliance, app-data and device-lifecycle requirements, plus emergency access, exceptions and support responsibilities.

3

Build a controlled pilot

Configure representative groups and supported platforms, use report-only evaluation where available, and verify access and recovery scenarios.

4

Roll out in stages

Expand by user and device cohort, communicate enrolment and sign-in changes, monitor policy effects and resolve legitimate exceptions.

5

Document and govern

Provide the configuration baseline, licence dependencies, support playbooks and a review schedule for access, devices and exceptions.

Typical deliverables

Artifacts your team can use.

  • Identity, device, application and licence readiness assessment.
  • Target access and endpoint-management policy design.
  • MFA, Conditional Access and emergency-access decision record.
  • Intune enrolment, configuration, compliance and app-protection baseline.
  • Pilot evidence, rollout plan and exception register.
  • Administrator runbook and user-facing enrolment guidance.

Planning considerations

Dependencies to surface early.

  • EMS E3 and EMS E5 do not contain identical capabilities, and Microsoft 365 subscriptions may overlap with some entitlements; current licensing must be verified.
  • Conditional Access, risk-based policies, Intune capabilities and information protection each have specific licence, platform and configuration dependencies.
  • Legacy applications and protocols can fail when modern authentication or stronger access policy is enforced.
  • Emergency-access accounts, service identities and device-enrolment limits need explicit treatment rather than broad exclusions.
  • Personal-device programmes require a documented privacy position, supported applications and clear selective-removal behaviour.
  • Policy monitoring and device support after rollout need internal owners or a separately contracted service.

Frequently asked questions

Useful questions before you begin.

Is EMS the same as Microsoft 365?

No. Enterprise Mobility + Security is a suite focused on identity, access, device, application and related security capabilities. Some Microsoft 365 plans include overlapping or broader capabilities. The exact subscription combination should be checked to avoid gaps or unnecessary duplication.

Can Intune manage personal devices without taking over everything?

The appropriate model depends on platform, application and policy needs. Supported app-protection policies can protect corporate data in selected applications without full device enrolment in some scenarios. Requirements, privacy expectations and licence support must be confirmed.

Should Conditional Access policies be enabled for everyone at once?

A staged approach is safer. Establish emergency access, identify service and legacy dependencies, test representative users and devices, use report-only evaluation where available, and then enforce policies by controlled groups with monitored exceptions.

Does MFA stop every account attack?

No. MFA materially strengthens authentication but does not remove phishing, token theft, consent abuse, insecure recovery, malware or privileged misuse. Authentication-method quality, access policy, user awareness, device security and monitoring remain relevant.

Does deployment include ongoing device support?

Not automatically. The project can design and roll out the agreed controls and provide operating guidance. Help-desk coverage, continuous policy monitoring, device troubleshooting and response commitments require named internal owners or a separate service agreement.
