Where the work begins

Build the decision around the business requirement.

Office 365 remains the name of several productivity-service plans, while Microsoft 365 describes a broader portfolio that can combine those services with additional identity, device, security and Windows capabilities depending on the plan. Atmic helps organisations select against current requirements, prepare the tenant, migrate business email and collaboration data, onboard users and document administration. Features and entitlements are checked against the exact subscription rather than inferred from the product family name.

Problems we help address

Clarity before configuration.

Subscription choices are being compared by headline labels without mapping users to the services, security features and desktop applications they actually need.
Email domains, identities, groups, shared mailboxes, aliases, archives and applications have not been fully inventoried before migration.
Tenant roles, multifactor authentication, external sharing and data-retention decisions need business owners and a controlled implementation sequence.
Users require coordinated account activation, application setup, data transition and practical guidance to begin working effectively.
Administration has accumulated inconsistent settings, unused licences or undocumented exceptions that make routine change harder to assess.

Scope and capabilities

What a well-scoped engagement can include.

Final scope depends on the environment, priorities, product entitlements and agreed responsibilities.

01

Requirements and subscription mapping

Map user groups to email, storage, collaboration, installed-app, identity, device, security and compliance needs. Validate each capability against current Microsoft service descriptions and purchasing terms.

02

Tenant and domain preparation

Plan tenant settings, verified domains, administrative roles, naming, groups and DNS changes. Record dependencies such as line-of-business applications, scanners, relays and third-party archives.

03

Email and collaboration migration

Assess source mailboxes, calendars, contacts, files and collaboration spaces; define coexistence where needed; pilot representative data and prepare sequenced migration batches with validation.

04

Identity and security baseline

Configure agreed sign-in, MFA, role, sharing, audit and protection settings according to available licences. Microsoft Entra Conditional Access and advanced security capabilities require suitable entitlements.

05

User onboarding and endpoint readiness

Prepare accounts, licence assignment, supported client applications, profiles and guidance. Device management or application-management work is included only where the selected scope and licences support it.

06

Administration and handover

Document tenant settings, administrator responsibilities, joiner-mover-leaver steps, service requests, known exceptions and escalation paths for Microsoft and any migration-tool suppliers.

Potential business benefits

Designed for usefulness after handover.

Subscription decisions tied to user roles and required capabilities rather than duplicated or assumed entitlements.
A migration sequence that accounts for identity, DNS, applications, data and user communications.
A consistent tenant baseline for administration, sharing and sign-in protection.
Clearer onboarding and support information for users and internal administrators.
A record of decisions, exceptions and operational ownership for future change.

Practical use cases

Move business email to Exchange Online

Inventory mailboxes and mail flow, resolve identity and domain dependencies, pilot data movement, schedule batches, change DNS at the planned point and validate delivery, clients and business applications.

Introduce a collaboration baseline

Define how SharePoint, OneDrive and, where licensed, Microsoft Teams should be provisioned, shared and owned so collaboration can grow without uncontrolled sites or guest access.

Review a mature tenant

Assess privileged roles, MFA coverage, external sharing, inactive accounts, licence assignment, mail-flow dependencies and administrative processes, then prioritise changes with business owners.

Assessment and implementation

A controlled route from current state to usable outcome.

Each stage establishes evidence for the next decision. The sequence is adjusted to suit risk, dependencies and change windows.

1

Profile users and services

Group users by work pattern and capability need, inventory the source environment and identify applications, domains, data and support dependencies.

2

Confirm licences and design

Validate current plan entitlements and define tenant, identity, mail, sharing, migration and administration decisions before configuration begins.

3

Prepare and pilot

Configure the agreed baseline, verify domains and connectivity, test representative accounts and data, and refine the user and support guidance.

4

Migrate and onboard

Run approved batches, communicate changes, validate mail and collaboration functions, and track issues through an agreed cutover process.

5

Stabilise and hand over

Close migration exceptions, provide configuration and operating records, and distinguish project stabilisation from any ongoing managed support.

Typical deliverables

Artifacts your team can use.

  • User and workload requirements matrix with subscription assumptions.
  • Tenant, domain, identity and security configuration design.
  • Source inventory and migration-batch plan.
  • Pilot, cutover, validation and rollback checklists.
  • User onboarding and administrator guidance.
  • Licence-assignment record, exception log and handover pack.

Planning considerations

Dependencies to surface early.

  • Microsoft 365 and Office 365 plan names do not by themselves prove a feature entitlement; current service descriptions and order terms govern availability.
  • Microsoft Teams availability and commercial packaging can vary by plan, market and purchase route and should be confirmed during subscription selection.
  • Source-system type, data volume, throttling, internet capacity and coexistence needs affect the migration method and schedule.
  • DNS access and the inventory of relays, applications and devices that send email are critical cutover dependencies.
  • Retention, eDiscovery, DLP and other compliance settings require policy owners and, in some cases, additional licences; they should not be enabled from generic assumptions.
  • Routine tenant administration and user support continue after the migration project and need a named owner or separate agreement.

Frequently asked questions

Useful questions before you begin.

Are Microsoft 365 and Office 365 the same thing?

They overlap, but the labels are not interchangeable. Office 365 remains a service family for productivity and collaboration offerings. Microsoft 365 is the broader portfolio and some plans add identity, device, security or Windows capabilities. The exact plan and current terms determine what is included.

Can we move email without moving every file at the same time?

Yes. Email, personal files and team content can follow different waves when dependencies and user experience are planned. The sequence should account for links, permissions, client configuration, coexistence and the ability of support teams to assist users.

Will all users need the same subscription?

Not necessarily. Different roles may need different applications, mailbox, security, device-management or compliance capabilities. Mixed licensing should be assessed carefully so shared policies do not depend on features unavailable to some users.

Does enabling MFA require Conditional Access?

Microsoft provides more than one way to require MFA. Conditional Access supports policy-based decisions but needs appropriate Microsoft Entra licensing. The design should use a supported method, protect emergency access and avoid leaving legacy authentication paths unexamined.

What happens after migration support ends?

The handover identifies administrators, user-support routes, vendor escalation, recurring reviews and unresolved items. Ongoing tenant administration, licence changes and response commitments are not included unless they are separately scoped.
